The Holidays start coming a bit more rapidly once November hits, two of the most beloved holidays are celebrated within two months of each other. Thanksgiving and Christmas (or Hanukkah) are home to some of the biggest family gatherings. Remember that long lost Grandpa you haven’t seen since you were two? Well, there’s a very real possibility he can show up at any holiday party and while he remembers you in diapers, you barely remember his name. Unfortunately, there is an alternative reality when grandparents that have been in our lives every day as long as we can remember no longer remember our names. This can make for awkward conversations around the dinner table and that’s why it’s important to have an educated understanding of conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Understanding

We all have our moments of frustration and confusion, unfortunately those that suffer from dementia have these feelings quite often and it’s not as easy to regulate them. Forgetfulness isn’t the worst of this disease, although it’s definitely the most obvious symptom. Those with conditions such as Dementia or Alzheimer’s often find themselves lost, or in a fog, they might even be lethargic. Patience is the best course of action in these times, most of the time our loved ones aren’t even aware of their condition and it can be heartbreaking to be treated differently because of it.

A great way to make a loved one with these conditions feel more comfortable and at ease is to welcome them into family events and activities, leaving them left out based on the assumption that they wouldn’t be fit to participate can only make things worse. Being included is a very simple, yet grand gesture that can really turn their night around.

Adaptability

People that suffer from dementia spend the rest of their lives adapting and adjusting to new routines and treatments. Sometimes family and friends need to do the same, a comfortable and caring environment can make a worlds difference. If you know that someone might be attending a gathering, event, or party and they regularly battle conditions like Dementia and Alzheimer’s, a great way to make them feel more comfortable is to schedule the event at a time and place that might be more suitable for their needs.

Planning activities that are easy to follow is also a good start. Simple board games or mind games to keep them sharp and included can go a long way. Other games and activities that are specially made for this disease are also helpful and they come at a reasonable price.

If dementia progresses enough that it qualifies as a severe case, a loss of basic function and motor skills can occur. Sometimes it can feel like the biggest chore to even eat, that’s why these dining aids are useful for family meals and gatherings. One night of family fun is enough to drain anyone, so if weighted utensils and specially designed dinnerware can conserve some energy, why not?

The holidays will always be a stressful, yet wonderful time of year, even for those that have a hard time remembering them. It’s not often that the whole family gets together and it takes very little to make our loved ones feel at home with us over the holidays. Stay together this holiday season and remember, it’s never a bad time to celebrate family! And gifts, we love gifts.
